Water management for modern farmers

Most irrigation still runs on a calendar. Running it on measurements is the cheapest efficiency available to farming.
Irrigating on a fixed schedule guarantees watering when the crop does not need it. Scheduling from soil moisture and weather data instead routinely cuts water use substantially with no yield penalty, using equipment that costs very little.
Delivery method is the next decision. Drip and micro-sprinkler systems deliver far more of the water to the root zone than flood irrigation, at the cost of capital, maintenance and filtration that has to be taken seriously or the emitters clog.
Groundwater is the shared problem nobody can solve individually. Where aquifers are falling, each farm’s rational choice is to pump, and only collective rules with real measurement change the outcome. Recharge structures help, but only alongside limits on extraction.
Capture and storage deserve more attention than they get. Farm ponds, rainwater harvesting and bunding smooth out an increasingly erratic rainfall pattern, and they protect the crop in exactly the years that matter.
Soil itself is the largest reservoir available. Organic matter dramatically increases how much water a field holds, which means practices that build soil are water management even when nobody calls them that.
