Regenerative agriculture explained

The term has no agreed definition, which is both its strength and the reason claims made under it deserve scrutiny.
Regenerative agriculture is defined by outcomes rather than rules: leave the soil in better condition than you found it. Because no certification body owns the phrase, it covers everything from serious long-term practice to marketing.
The recurring principles are consistent even where the label is not: minimise disturbance, keep the soil covered, maintain living roots year-round, increase plant diversity, and integrate animals where the system allows.
The measurable outcomes are soil organic matter, water infiltration, biological activity and reduced input dependence. These change slowly, over years rather than seasons, which is why credible claims come with a baseline and a timeline.
Yields often dip during transition and recover, sometimes with lower input costs producing better margins at slightly lower output. Any account that skips the dip is selling something.
Carbon claims are the weakest part. Soil carbon is genuinely difficult and expensive to measure, easily reversed by one season of ploughing, and heavily dependent on starting conditions. Treat sequestration as a welcome side effect rather than the business case.
