Green cities of the future

The greenest urban technology is still density with good transit. Everything else is a refinement of that.
Renderings of vertical forests distract from the boring truth: a compact city where daily needs are reachable without a car outperforms almost any technological intervention, because it removes emissions rather than offsetting them.
Retrofit matters more than new construction. Most of the buildings that will exist in twenty years already stand, so insulation, glazing, heat pumps and ventilation in existing stock deliver far more than a small number of exemplary new developments.
Heat is now the dominant urban climate risk. Shade, tree canopy, reflective surfaces and water features are cheap public health infrastructure, and the neighbourhoods that lack them are consistently the ones that can least afford the consequences.
Water needs the same rethink. Cities designed to drain rainfall as fast as possible flood downstream and go thirsty upstream; permeable surfaces, retention basins and restored waterways handle both problems at once.
The hard part is governance, not engineering. Land use rules, parking minimums and slow permitting decide what actually gets built, which is why the most consequential green city work often looks like unglamorous planning reform.
